Mirko Pedrotti Quintet

A synthesis of continuous creative exploration and the energy of rhythm, both musical and vital, the search for balance within the ensemble: nusica.org presents the new project of Mirko Pedrotti’s quintet, a close-knit formation celebrating 10 years of activity with Flam.

Flam is a percussion technique which consists of striking the instrument twice in quick succession. But it is also the flame that fuels the creative drive of a historic group that reaches the milestone of 10 years. A dual interpretation that gives the title to Mirko Pedrotti Quintet’s fourth album, set to be released on nusica.org on June 18, 2023.

  • Mirko Pedrotti (vibraphone)
  • Lorenzo Sighel (alto saxophone)
  • Luca Olzer (rhodes, piano, and synthesizers)
  • Michele Bazzanella (bass)
  • Matteo Giordani (drums)

This project highlights the melodic aspect without, however, relinquishing its nature where the energy of rhythm is the pillar and main characteristic. Balancing the sounds and form, the interplay of fullness and emptiness, dialogues between all and in pairs, are just some of the elements explored in this recording.

With this idea, the ensemble led by Mirko Pedrotti (vibraphone) with Lorenzo Sighel (alto saxophone), Luca Olzer (Rhodes, piano, synthesizers), Michele Bazzanella (bass), and Matteo Giordani (drums) has shaped six tracks and two “fragments”: Lupi Solitari, a piece “for all nonconformists and loners” where the modal approach is only clear in appearance, then opening up to surprising grafts, with Arabic melodies, Rhodes and vibraphone riffs, and new, unexpected harmonies; on the other hand, the dedication of Rouge One is to rebels and adventurers, taking its title from the Star Wars spin-off, with a reworking of a musical fragment that intertwines the famous melodies of the Imperial March and the Force theme; Upstairs leads the listener in an unknown and at times confused direction, dreamlike, as if walking through Escher’s Stairs; Flam, which gives the album its title, encapsulates the trust that compelled the various musicians to serve the composition, in search of the right balance. The first part, which clearly describes the nature of the quintet, predominantly focused on the rhythmic and frenetic aspect, is complemented by a second part, calmer and more melodious, representing the direction the group intends to take.

Following that are Riflesso d’Ombra, a reflective and dreamy piece that brings out the melodic aspect of the bass, and Kimèra, the first composition written for this formation, revisited ten years later in a renewed form as a celebration of this anniversary. As tradition dictates, the album concludes with two more “fragments” from the Suite container, a creative well from which the group draws elements or stimuli to develop for subsequent compositions.
